Are we Biased?
You will see a lot of references to Linux at our site, as it is the future of PC's (sorry Microsoft!), but we realize that it is not for everyone. All systems are available with MS Windows, or Linux

Since this forum has been dead for over TWO YEARS. I just figured I'd add something for the hell of it.

I posted a link to PC Stability on the Linux Format website. Hopefully it'll bring in people interested in buying a pre-loaded Linux system. As time goes on, Linux is becoming more than just a viable alternative to windows. If you want to get the most out of your PC hardware, it's the ONLY way to go

Thanks, I just hope that Linux becomes more familiar in general. I am not the biggest fan of OEM's like HP, Dell, etc., but they have the visibility that could make the difference, if they would just commit to it. Maybe the DoJ's new agreement that stipulates that M$ can't interfere with OEM's selling systems with dual-boot setups will give them the guts to offer such a system, eh?

I've been following the discussion over on MandrakeForum about your company. Good to see someone shipping Linux pre-installed, I wish more places would do it: the thing that scares a lot of people off Linux is the need to install it themselves and the possibility of hardware problems. This sort of arrangement levels the playingfield tremendously. Well done for having the courage to stand up to the Beast and good luck!

Well, toader, it would seem that you are very frustrated with all current Operating Systems. Even though none of these OS's are perfect, they are all that we have, at this time. I would argue that they 'suck', at any rate. The biggest problem with M$, is the cost, and usage restrictions. All versions of Windows are quite usable, though they can also be unstable. The instability issue is usually one of poor installation. Any windows machine with quality hardware, and properly written, and installed drivers, is a good machine (sorry, HP, Compaq, IBM, Gateway, you guys don't know the meaning of quality, Dell is somewhat better)! When people complain that their machines crash all the time, this is NOT the fault of M$ alone. It takes collaboration to make a truly unstable machine.
Linux, now is another issue. I feel that Linux is a better option for a workstation, or game box, as long as you understand the limitations going in. Linux has come a LONG WAY in the last 18 months, far enough along that for many people, it can replace M$. Linux still won't work with EVERY scanner, digital camera, printer, and game-pad/joystick, but this is in no way the fault of Linux. The manufacturers of this hardware need to write Linux drivers for their products. A good example is nVidia. There are VERY good, fully functional drivers available for EVERY nVidia graphics card. Yes, even 'Twin-view' works, for those of you that have a GeForce2 MX with Twin-view. If you are a QuakeIII fan, Linux is the only way to play. Linux Quake runs faster, and smoother than the M$ version.
Unix is a relatively ancient OS, but I will defend it. Unix does what it was designed for exceptionally well. Don't forget that without Unix, there would be no Linux!
Mac is a different world, but one with VERY loyal followers. I personally dislike Mac because I feel that it is an OS with training wheels, kinda like AOL as an operating system (shudder). That's a scary thought!. Anyway, Mac's are stable, at least, which is the first requirement (or should be) of any OS.
There are other Operating Systems, of course. I keep hearing that NASA has their own OS, with a GUI, that is very advanced, but there is virtually nothing known about it, and probably never will be...
For now, I am happy to use Linux, while I wait for the next improvements (and third-party drivers) to make it even better.

Let's face it, Windows sucks, Linux sucks, Unix sucks, MAC OS sucks, DOS sucks, THEY ALL SUCK.

Why are all operating systems still stuck in the '70s? When is someone going to design an operating system that is capable of truly utilizing the full potential of modern computer architecture?

OK, try to keep this civil. That applies to Linux fan's, as well as those that swear by Microsoft (hereafter referred to as M$). Please don't flame anyone if they don't agree. I'll be the first to say that although I love Linux, without Windows we would not be having this discussion. The last six years have brought an explosion of technology, commerce, and, of course, the internet (!!!), that began with the release of Windows95. Like it or not, most users only know the computing world as seen through the eyes of M$. I think that Linux has made quantum leaps in the past year, particularly Mandrake. Yes, I know, everyone thought that Red-Hat would be the distro that would advance Linux, but Mandrake is so good, so slick, and so available (check out the store shelves), that it has out-sold Red-Hat this last quarter. I understand why. It's my choice for my main workstation, period. IMHO, MandrakeSoft will be the dominant Linux player, and a household name. What do you think?
