Are we Biased?
You will see a lot of references to Linux at our site, as it is the future of PC's (sorry Microsoft!), but we realize that it is not for everyone. All systems are available with MS Windows, or Linux

Location Change!

I am no longer located at 12400B Blue Ridge. Until I find a suitable location, I will be working from my home (address in left-hand column). I may end up working from home all summer...

In the meantime, nothing else has changed, everyone is welcome to come and see me at home.

Getting to my house is easy, I'm half-a-dozen houses west of Blue Ridge on 97th St. That's a right-turn if you're coming from Bannister, or a left-turn if you're coming from 470/Grandview.

I will be forwarding the phone to my home number, or changing the home number to the (763-4300) business number.

More info later...

Systems Page Updated!

I have finally taken the time to change the current base systems that are available, and these will change soon, as well, since AMD is planning more price drops in the weeks ahead...

The Durons are still around, however, the Semprons have a better price/performance ratio. Since the Semprons have 256k level 2 cache (some models are actually Thoroughbred cores), they are basically Athlon XP's with a 166Mhz front side bus. Other Semprons have the newer Thorton core. The Duron CPU's, with just 64k level 2 cache, simply can't keep up. The 2200+ runs at 1.5Ghz, while the 2800+ runs at 2.0Ghz. When compared to the Intel Celeron 2.2, and 2.8 (and even the P4's of the same speed), these new AMD CPU's really shine, at a lower price point to boot...

The Athlon64 is the new kid on the block, and it's fast becoming the defacto choice for discerning gamers. Microsoft won't be releasing Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for Extended Systems (that's a mouthful) until next spring. For anyone interested, I will install the BETA version of this, on request, on any Athlon64 system I build. I have installed it several times, and it's rock solid, with 64-bit drivers available now for nVidia and ATI video cards.

Of course I advise installing 64-bit Mandrake Linux (which has been available for over a year) on these machines, or we can setup a dual boot, with both. Keep in mind that you can run ANY Operating System that you like, 64-bit or 32-bit, Windows (any version) or Linux. The athlon64 gives you a lot of flexibility!

The days of 32-bit PC's are numbered, get your 64-bit PC today!

Thanks for checking out the site. The ThriftyNickel is a weekly publication, so the prices are not always current. This site is updated daily, or when prices change.

Welcome to the site. I am still populating the content of all of the links, check back later if you don't find the info you're looking for. If you have any questions, feel free to register. Then you can post questions to the Forum. There are only two topics, so far, I'll add topics as needed...

Do I need a login?
Uh, No! You may have noticed that there isn't a Login box anymore!

I had to move this site on short notice last spring. I barely got the database backed up in time. For now, this site is static, which is why I haven't updated it for nearly a year. Static pages are old-school, and very labor intensive. At least it's still using Cascading Style Sheets, which is now the one easy change I can make that affects the whole site with a single edit. I may be making a change to the old LAMP scripts, but nothing major, really, just the overall look'n'feel.
